Assessment of the iodine status of children of pre‐school age (6 months–5 years) in Rivers State, Nigeria

The study was to determine the iodine status of preschool children in Rivers State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional design and an experimental were employed study. population comprised all State. multistage sampling procedure used draw a sample size 330 children. Early morning casual urine samples collected from pupils for analysis urinary concentration (UIC) using sensitive colorimetric method Sandell–Kelthoff reaction. result revealed that none severely deficient, 2.41% moderately 36.14% mildly deficient; 53.01% adequate, while 4.82% more than adequate. found have adequate based on median UIC 143.3 µg/L, within optimal (100–199 µg/L) range iodine, strongly suggesting deficiency seems not be public health problem among
